Combining Lexical and Grammatical Features to Improve Readability Measures for First and Second Language Texts
نویسندگان
چکیده
This work evaluates a system that uses interpolated predictions of reading difficulty that are based on both vocabulary and grammatical features. The combined approach is compared to individual grammarand language modeling-based approaches. While the vocabulary-based language modeling approach outperformed the grammar-based approach, grammar-based predictions can be combined using confidence scores with the vocabulary-based predictions to produce more accurate predictions of reading difficulty for both first and second language texts. The results also indicate that grammatical features may play a more important role in second language readability than in first language readability.

Combining a Statistical Language Model with Logistic Regression to Predict the Lexical and Syntactic Difficulty of Texts for FFL
Reading is known to be an essential task in language learning, but finding the appropriate text for every learner is far from easy. In this context, automatic procedures can support the teacher’s work. Some tools exist for English, but at present there are none for French as a foreign language (FFL). In this paper, we present an original approach to assessing the readability of FFL texts using ...
متن کاملManipulation of Ideology in Translation of Political Texts: A Criti-cal Discourse Analysis Perspective

متن کاملOn Improving the Accuracy of Readability Classification using Insights from Second Language Acquisition
We investigate the problem of readability assessment using a range of lexical and syntactic features and study their impact on predicting the grade level of texts. As empirical basis, we combined two web-based text sources, Weekly Reader and BBC Bitesize, targeting different age groups, to cover a broad range of school grades. On the conceptual side, we explore the use of lexical and syntactic ...
متن کاملInvestigating Noticing in Narrative Writing Tasks and its Effect on EFL Learners’ Writing Performance
The practice of ‘writing to learn’ has been propounded as fast-tracking the dynamic process of noticing problems in L2 writing. However, a marked melioration in learners’ attempted output requires a form of corrective feedback, among which modeling has proven to bear vigorous input enhancement effects. The present study attempted to inspect what EFL learners notice throughout their own output a...
